Last updated: 2026-06-23

This Privacy Policy explains how breve (“breve”, “the app”, “we”, “us”, or “our”) collects, uses, shares, and protects your information when you use the breve mobile app and website.

breve is a language-learning app operated by Felix Lindgren (publishing under the name “Brevelang”), based in Sweden. If you have any questions about this policy or your data, you can contact us at felix@brevelang.com.

This document is our privacy policy.

1. Who we are

The person responsible for your data (the “data controller” under EU law) is:

Felix Lindgren (Brevelang)
Gotland, Sweden
Email: felix@brevelang.com

2. What data we collect

We only collect what we need to run breve and help you learn. Specifically:

Account information

  • Your email address
  • Authentication credentials (passwords are stored in hashed form by our authentication provider; we never see or store your password in plain text)
  • A unique account identifier

Learning data

  • The language you are learning and your self-selected level (e.g. CEFR level)
  • Words you tap, look up, and the state of each word for you (new, learning, or known)
  • Videos (clips) you view and your progress through them
  • Your streaks, daily goals, coins, and other progress and activity within the app

Usage and device data (analytics)

  • Device type, operating system, and app version
  • Language and region settings
  • How you interact with the app (screens viewed, features used, events such as swipes and taps)
  • Approximate, non-precise location derived from your IP address (country/region level only)
  • Diagnostic and crash information

Communications

  • If you email us, we receive your email address and the contents of your message.

What we do NOT collect

  • We do not collect precise (GPS) location.
  • We do not access your contacts, photos, microphone, or camera.
  • We do not collect payment or financial information (breve is currently free).
  • We do not knowingly collect data from children (see Section 11).

3. How we use your data

We use your data to:

  • Provide and operate the app, including signing you in and saving your progress
  • Personalize your learning feed (we use your word knowledge and activity to choose clips at the right level for you)
  • Track your progress, streaks, goals, and other features
  • Understand how the app is used so we can fix problems and improve it
  • Send you essential service messages (for example, email verification and account-related notices)
  • Keep the app secure, prevent fraud and abuse, and debug issues
  • Comply with our legal obligations

We do not sell your personal data, and we do not use your data for third-party advertising.

4. Legal bases for processing (EU/EEA users)

Under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), we rely on the following legal bases:

  • Performance of a contract — to provide the app and features you sign up for.
  • Legitimate interests — to analyze usage, improve and secure the app, and prevent abuse, balanced against your rights.
  • Consent — where required (for example, any optional analytics or future communications you opt into). You can withdraw consent at any time.
  • Legal obligation — where we are required to retain or disclose data by law.

5. Who we share data with

We share data only with service providers (“processors”) that help us run breve. They may process your data only on our instructions, and they are not permitted to sell it. These include:

We may also disclose data if required by law, to respond to a valid legal request, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of our users and the app.

6. YouTube embedded videos

breve uses the YouTube IFrame Player API to play videos inside the app. Videos are streamed directly from YouTube and are not re-hosted by us.

By using breve, you agree to be bound by the YouTube Terms of Service (https://www.youtube.com/t/terms).

Google may collect data through the embedded player (for example, via cookies or device identifiers) in accordance with the Google Privacy Policy (https://policies.google.com/privacy). We encourage you to review Google’s policy to understand how they handle your data. You can manage Google’s use of your data via Google’s Ads Settings and your device privacy controls.

7. International data transfers

We are based in Sweden, but some of our service providers are located in the United States or other countries outside the European Economic Area (EEA). Where your data is transferred outside the EEA, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses or the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, where applicable, to protect it.

8. How long we keep your data

  • We keep your account and learning data for as long as your account is active.
  • If you delete your account, we delete the associated personal data within 30 days, except for limited data we are required to retain for legal, security, or fraud-prevention reasons.
  • Analytics data is retained according to our analytics provider’s standard retention settings.

9. Deleting your account and data

You can delete your account and the personal data associated with it at any time. You can do this:

  • Inside the app: go to Settings → Delete account.
  • Outside the app: email us at felix@brevelang.com and we will process your request.

When you delete your account, we delete the personal data associated with it. This is a permanent deletion, not a temporary deactivation. We may retain a minimal amount of data where we are legally required to, and we will tell you if that applies.

10. Your rights

If you are in the EEA, you have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you
  • Correct inaccurate data
  • Delete your data (“right to erasure”)
  • Restrict or object to certain processing
  • Receive your data in a portable format
  • Withdraw consent at any time, where processing is based on consent

To exercise any of these rights, email felix@brevelang.com. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. In Sweden, this is the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection (Integritetsskyddsmyndigheten, IMY): https://www.imy.se.

11. Children

breve is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country, which may be higher, such as 16 in parts of the EEA). We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under this age. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us at felix@brevelang.com and we will delete it.

12. Security

We take reasonable measures to protect your data, including encrypting data in transit using HTTPS/TLS, storing passwords only in hashed form via our authentication provider, and limiting access to your data. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, however, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

13. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. If we make material changes, we will notify you within the app or by email. Your continued use of breve after changes take effect means you accept the updated policy.
